Today, we’ll focus on Č, Ć, DŽ, Đ, Š, Ž, LJ, NJ, C and R.
If you’ve ever struggled with letters like Č, Ć, Dž, Đ, Š, Ž, Lj, Nj, C, or R – you’re not alone! Some of these sounds are difficult even for some natives (children, people with teeth-related problems…) But don’t worry, this guide will help you master them with ease.
1. Č vs. Ć
Even native Croatian speakers sometimes mix these up. Here’s the difference:
Č – A hard ‘ch’ sound, like in chocolate. Example: čokolada (chocolate).
Ć – Softer, almost like the t in future. Example: ćevap (grilled dish).
Tip: If you’re unsure, pronounce the same sound you say in teacher for both of them, just be careful when writing.
2. Dž vs. Đ
These sounds might remind you of English:
Dž – A hard ‘j’, like in jungle. Example: džungla (jungle).
Đ – A softer ‘j’, try to stretch your lips into a wide smile and now say jungle. Example: đak (student).
3. Š vs. Ž
One is a sharp ‘sh’, and the other is a smooth ‘zh’ sound:
Š – Like sh in shoe. Example: škola (school).
Ž – Like s in measure. Example: žena (woman).
4. Lj and Nj
These two sounds exist in English in certain words:
Lj –Like l in love and y in yogurt at the same time. Example: ljubav (love).
Nj – Like the n in news. Example: Njemačka (Germany).
5. C and R
Though they seem simple, these letters often cause trouble:
C – Sounds like ts in cats. Example: cesta (road).
R – Rolled, like in Spanish or Italian. Example: riba (fish).
